Celebrate National Bike Month in May with Duck on a Bike. Have students create a list of bike safety rules and invite a crossing-guard or police officer in to discuss bike safety. Create bike diagrams, labeling the different parts, and then link force and motion lessons identifying where the bike moves. Younger students will love the animal sounds, which is the perfect time to introduce onomatopoeia and personification. Older students can create their own animal-on-a-mode-of-transportation story, adapting the original model to fit their new setting and characters. Written and illustrated by David Shannon, Duck on a Bike is a good link to a David Shannon author study.
