Colorful 3D Butterfly

Colorful 3D Butterfly by Andrea Spillett

  • Your students will become true butterfly enthusiasts by creating this colorful three-dimensional butterfly.
  • What You Need (1 per student):
  • 12” x 18” piece of black construction paper
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Different colored tissue paper of various sizes
  • 2 black pipe cleaners and assorted other colors
  • Hole punch

What To Do:

  1. Hold the 12” x 18” piece of black construction paper horizontally. Fold in half. Trace an outline of a butterfly on the paper. Cut out the shape.
  2. Fold in half. Draw and cut out different shapes inside the wings. Leave about 1 inch between the inner shapes.
  3. Glue different colored tissue paper on one side of the butterfly cutout.
  4. Glue the other part of the black cutout onto the tissue-papered side of the butterfly. Trim the extra pieces of paper off the butterfly wings.
  5. Give students pipe cleaners to form the different parts of the butterfly’s body. Make the butterfly even more colorful by giving students several colors from which to choose.
  6. Use a hole punch to poke a hole at the bottom. Connect the body to the wings.
